Film and Youth Work
We can now offer Agored Cymru accredited training in Film and Youth Work. This two-day course (3 credits at Level 2) covers principles of film education, filmmaking (planning, filming and editing), resources, project ideas and teaching techniques. We can deliver this in English or Welsh anywhere in Wales, and follow-up courses are also available.
FFILMSCHOOL PLUS
Ffilmschool Plus is an affordable new CPD programme for Primary and Secondary schools in Wales. It will show how you can use film and media to engage and motivate children and develop oracy, reading and writing skills. Ffilmschool Plus can also facilitate and enhance professional learning communities.
Hay Festival 2010
On June 3rd, 21 children from the Powys writing squads worked with Tom Barrance and poet Francesca Kay to create poem films at the Hay Festival. They only had four hours: an hour and a half in the morning to learn about filming, shoot their images and write the first draft of their poems; and two and a half hours in the afternoon to refine their poems, perform and record them, edit their images to the poems and screen them.
Duffryn Film and Music project
In this project, we worked with three classes (a Year 7 English class, a Year 11 vocational class and a Year 12 Media Studies class). The project included film viewing and discussion, continuity and montage editing, music-making and film-making activities. The Year 12 class made music films (using Final Cut Express and Garageband) to reflect [...]
Soundtrack 2009
For Soundtrack 2009 Tom Barrance delivered an interactive workshop in Cineworld, Cardiff which was linked by satellite to Scala Prestatyn and Aberystwyth Arts Centre. He also delivered hands-on workshops in which students created scores for a suspense sequence, and made montage films (edited to their own music) using Garageband and Final Cut Express.
Bettws languages project
This project involved Bettws High School, Newport and its partner primary schools. An able and talented Year 7 group combined learning about film language and film-making with work in French and Welsh, using professional video compositing techniques (including multiple video tracks and keyframing). Children then went back to their Primary schools to help Tom Barrance [...]
Fairwater Film and Sound project
Over the Spring half term we worked with young people (12-18) at Waterhall Youth Centre in the Fairwater Communities First area in Cardiff, with support from the Communities First team. The young people learnt about funk music from Kev Sayer of Community Music Wales, and went on to create their own short pieces of music [...]
Soundtrack 2008
Tom Barrance worked with Neil White of Community Music Wales to provide workshops as part of the Soundtrack film and music festival in Cardiff Bay on 27th and 28th November. In this example from Friday’s half-day workshop, GCSE Media Studies students from Ysgol Rhydfelen (Garth Olwg) used Garageband to compose a score for a short [...]
BayLit
This Welsh language workshop was part of Academi‘s ‘BayLit/Llen y Lli’ festival in Cardiff Bay in October 2008. We worked with Mererid Hopwood (at left in the picture above) on this one-day activity. The chidren were all members of Academi’s ‘Sgwadiau Sgwennu’ (writing squads) which are designed to develop the writing talent of the future. [...]
Ffilmschool 2
Ffilmschool 2 began in Summer 2007. Here, rather than just working in schools for a week (as in Ffilmschool) we worked with one group of schools in the Briton Ferry Communities First area in Neath Port Talbot over a year. This project was supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Wales; the [...]
Ffilmschool
Ffilmschool (2006-7) was a year-long series of short film-making projects, mostly in schools with children aged around 10-12 (Years 6 and 7), principally funded by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Wales. The project was also supported by Apple and Canon. Most of the projects lasted around a week. With each project, we [...]
Training
We provide training around Wales and beyond for teachers, youth and community workers and others. Our training programme covers using and teaching with film and media, film-making, and training in using specific creative software.
Primary and transition
Several of our projects and workshops have focused on Primary and transition. Ffilmschool 2, our year-long project in Neath Port Talbot, demonstrated how non-narrative film and film-making can support speaking and listening, groupwork and writing skills in Years 6 and 7.
Editsense
Learn about film by editing our films using standard video software, on Mac or PC. Four editable films (over 100 clips), interactive guide to film language, plus printable instructions, stills and samples.
