This one-day INSET will show how you can integrate viewing, discussing and making films into classroom work to develop skills in reading, writing and oracy. We will focus on practical, manageable approaches which have been tried and tested in schools around Wales. The course will be interactive: you’ll try out activities and approaches for yourselves.
Content
- Introducing film language: activities to develop children’s awareness of camera, sound and editing and how these help them to understand narrative, character and genre
- Using moving images to stimulate discussion, prediction and different kinds of writing
- Examples of project work using film-making to support creative writing
- Film-making activities and how to plan them to maximise opportunities for learning
- Where to access suitable films and other resources for classroom use
- How film viewing and film-making activities link to the Skills Framework.
Outcomes
Participants will develop
- confidence in using the viewing, discussion and making of films to support literacy and oracy
- awareness of how moving images can provide opportunities to develop skills
- knowledge of resources available on DVD and online.

- a glossary of appropriate terms for discussing films
- a guide to film-making activities, from simple introductory activities to longer projects
- a summary of how moving images relate to the skills framework

Course leader Tom Barrance is Director of Media Education Wales. He has delivered workshops, INSET and
projects on moving images around the UK and beyond, and has recently completed a year-long transition
project linking film-making to poetry and music in Neath Port Talbot.
