This two-hour workshop is aimed at AS Media Studies students who will be making films for their ME3 coursework production task. It was very popular at the 2004 Cardiff Screen Festival so we've decided to make it available for individual schools and other venues.

It includes:

  • Viewing and discussing a varied selection of short films and looking at how they tell their stories.
  • Examples of short films which illustrate specific aspects of film language, including framing, colour, sound, editing and the 180 degree rule.
  • Case study of a short genre film: looking at the treatment, storyboard and script and compare these to the final version.
  • Guidelines for planning, including storyboarding; script format; shooting schedule; doing a recce; organising the filming and editing.

This can also be combined with an editing activity to make a day workshop.
