The Beach for iMovie 09

Stills from the Beach film

“Brilliant…a fantastic resource for media teachers and students.”
Steffany Hassell, South Manchester City Learning Centre

The Beach has over 50 shots, specially filmed to help you explore how films tell stories.

The story is simple: a boy stands on a beach looking out to sea. He gets a text message, looks around, but there’s nobody there. Suddenly a girl appears from behind some rocks and walks up behind him.

By editing the clips you will learn about
framing your shot: where and when to use wide shots, long shots and close-ups
editing action: how you can make the action flow from shot to shot
using camera movements
using camera position to show the space and how the characters relate to each other

Includes a sample edit, stills sheet and detailed instructions on how to use the film to learn about framing, sequencing, camera position, camera movement, shot-reverse shot, the 180 degree rule and editing on the action. This download version also includes a guide to basic iMovie editing techniques.

Clips are in h.264 format, black and white, 720×576. They are silent so you can create your own soundtrack using iMovie effects or Garageband.

“The footage is excellent. I love the variety of shots. There is a really clear narrative to the sequence, but enough variation for the edit to convey a number of moods / genres very effectively…The instructions are clear. They start with very specific ideas about the timing and selection of clips, but as the editing process progresses, allow the student to take more and more control.”
Richard Anderson, Wolverhampton City Learning Centre

The Beach is also available as part of our Editsense DVD-ROM, with three other editable films in full DV-PAL format for use in any editing program. The DVD-ROM also includes our Filmsense interactive guide to film language.
